I grew up and went to school in the south of Johannesburg, before moving to Port Elizabeth. I have played sport all my life, having played netball, volleyball and action cricket. I started playing bowls for the Moths Bowling Club at the age of 35, after a shoulder injury ended my provincial action cricket career. My in-laws were both bowlers and they encouraged me to starts bowls. In my 3rd year of playing, I was selected for the EP Inter-District squad and played as Lead for the following two years in the “B” Inter-District side. Thereafter, I played for the “A” Inter-District side for the past 11 years. In 2014 I was selected to Skip one of the “A” sides for the first time, and we won Gold. I have since represented EP in the Inter-District Tournament as Skip.

I took up this brilliant game of bowls after a Lombardy East Club fun day in December 2005, at the ripe old age of 34, and have never looked back.   I am extremely passionate about this game of ours, with a positive outlook and great people skills.   I have been involved in bowls in all aspects, from playing, administration and development, especially at grass-roots level, introducing school children, previously disadvantaged students and corporate staff.   I am highly ambitious and one of my greatest goals would be to represent my country by wearing the green and gold and playing for the Protea Squad.

Charlotte Roussouw

At a young age I watched Doug Watson and the SA team playing in the World Cup on TV and found it fascinating. I did not really think much about it until I was invited to play in a fun day on my birthday. I had so much fun that the following Monday I went to the closest bowls shop and bought the whole kit, bowls included. Family and friends found this very amusing, as bowls was considered an old persons game. It took me a year to get courage to phone the nearest club which at that time was Patterson Park Bowling Club, unfortunately since closed.

I was not all that competitive and really just played tabs and internal competitions. In my second year I won the Novice Champion of Champions. It was not until I won the club singles and had to play in the open Champion of Champions, which I won, that I was noticed by the then President of our District, Jacques de Villiers who invited me to come and play in the Development Squad. Played in this Squad for two years before being selected for the “B” Inter-District team and two years later for the “A” Inter-District team.

My only regret is that I did not play the game of bowls in a more serious manner from the start. It is a very competitive sport and only once you get seriously involved, do you understand the skill that is really required.  As with any sport, if you want to achieve you have to give it your full commitment and lots of practice.

“My love for Bowls”

I was an Aerobics Instructor in Port Elizabeth for several years and Neil Burkett and Geoff Gowar were two very dedicated students in my class. Neil tried for several years to “convince” me that Bowls is an awesome sport for Young and Old, and that I should consider it. I just laughed at him and of course did not agree.

Well………………….don’t be deceived by appearances, a humble game of lawn bowls is still capable of getting your heart “pumping”. Cecile Kritzinger, my mom, was diagnosed with Macular Degeneration 15 years ago. She started playing bowls for the National Association for Blind Bowlers.   I was her Coach/Director for approx. 2 years. My mom achieved several Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals for NABB PE.   I truly felt that I actually did not deserve these Medals as her Coach/Director, as I had not yet rolled a bowl.

The game of bowls crept its way into my heart and during 2001, I started my own bowling career at Westview Bowling Club. I spent my four Novice years there and then joined Western Suburbs Bowling Club.

Once this game is in your Blood and Heart, it is there for life!   I soon realized it is a game for people of all ages, abilities and fitness levels.   Strength and fitness become crucial at the  highest levels of competition.

We all have a “Goal” – Bowls is something I want to improve at all the time.

I have played bowls for Eastern Province for the past 10 years.

I started playing bowls at the ripe young age of 10.

I used to go with my father every time he went to play bowls and whenever I got an opportunity, before the game or during the tea break, I would be on the green learning to play.

It wasn't until I played my first tournament and won, that the bowls bug really bit.   A knee injury at school stopped me from being able to carry on with all my other sports, so I took up bowls more seriously.

Instead of doing homework, I would be on the green everyday practising.   I enjoy every chance I get to play, be it social, club competition or district competition.

I have been playing with Taylor bowls pretty much right through my bowls career starting with a Taylor Vector VS, until I came across the Taylor Ace and have not looked back since.

I find the Taylor Ace helps me a lot, because the consistent gradual finish still allows me to come around bowls.

I started playing bowls at the tender age of 6, back in 1996, mainly through family.   I enjoyed the game and had a couple of the best mentors a new bowler could ask for, and that in itself kept me developing and playing bowls.

I have a deep passion for this sport and will continue to pursue higher honours and achievements in bowls.

I grew up in the Strand in the Western Cape. Sport has always been part of my life since I can
remember. I played cricket and rugby prior to bowls.
I started playing bowls in 2009 at the Caledon Bowling Club and was introduced to the sport by
playing in the business league.
Today I am hooked on the sport. I was very fortunate to have been coached by a great lady who
assisted me in what I have achieved.
After starting to play in 2009, I was selected to play for Boland B for the first time in 2010.
I have represented my province Boland in the "B" inter-district from 2010 to 2015, and have now

Prof Stadler

I grew up in the Karoo and played all different sports all my life.
I started playing bowls in 2007.
A former teacher and cricket coach introduced me to the game, and I was hooked from day one.
Growing up in a sport mad family, with three brothers and a sister that all played sport, bowls was certainly a big challenge.
My brother also started playing bowls and soon the bets were on.
I started out with Taylor Lazers back then and soon moved to Taylor Ace, and never looked back again. I find them to be the best bowl on all surfaces.
I represented the Eden District for the first time in 2012 as part of the "B" side.
The last 3 years I was fortunate to play in the Eden District "A" side and have been selected to play in the "A" side again next year.

Arthur Langley

I was born in Vanderbijlpark, but grew up in Somerset East.  I played a number of sports, tennis, waterpolo, hockey, badminton, rugby and fishing, some of them at provincial level.

I was introduced to bowls through a company who hosted a family day. In 2006 I started playing seriously, but shortly thereafter fell ill.   It was only in 2008 that I was able to get

back on the bowling green and won the EP Novice Singles title. This was the start of great things to come.

Samantha Olivier

I started playing Bowls at the age of 16 when my father introduced me to the game of Lawn Bowls. Although I was playing school hockey and tennis I found the game of bowls very interesting and very competitive.

I loved it so much that I mostly focused on bowls as a sport. Within my first year of playing bowls I was invited to the trials for the Under 25’s Western Province side and was also selected to play Inter districts in 2011 (Bloemfontein) where we won bronze in my first U25 Inter Districts. This hooked me completely, and since then bowls became my first love in sports and my aim are to reach the highest level in the sport by representing South Africa.

I  started my bowls career with an old set of Henselite bowls. My dad took me to buy my first set of bowls and after rolling with several sets of different makes, I decided on a set of Taylor Ace SA bowls and have never looked back.
