BSA Veteran Masters 2019 |
Glenda Matthews – Port Natal
My initial perception of bowls was that this was a game for older people who liked wearing white clothes and brown shoes. After some persuasion my Dad had me playing in a Fun day at Mandene Park. At first the idea of bowling and then standing around for a while before it was your turn to play again was a bit of an adjustment from my hockey and squash days where there was plenty of running and action.But soon the bowls bug got me and I joined Mandene Park in 2002 and practiced frequently with my Dad. I realized that there was much skill and concentration required for this game. I entered the Novice singles and managed to win the event in my first year of bowling and then was invited to play in the Port Natal trips and our team won this event that year too. I was also then invited to play in the Port Natal Masters in 2003 and was runner up in my first year of playing in this demanding event. I was then selected to play in the Port Natal B team in 2004 for the Inter-District and then progressed to the Open team. I also soon realized that bowls had many challenges and that despite playing well you may not necessarily be the victor and understood the bowls phrase “On the Day”. My greatest bowls honour was being selected for the SA Veterans team in 2014 and 2015. Winning the Veterans Masters and the Open Inter-District in 2019 were also highlights of my bowls career. I now know that bowls is a game that is enjoyed by young and old. |
