NOLA WARNER – BORDER I joined the Old Selbornian Bowling Club in 2011 after watching my husband’s games from the bank for many years. I was hesitant to commit myself to bowls until my children had completed school. Friends of mine, who were lady members at our club, convinced me to join our Club and to enter the Ladies Nomads Nationals which was being hosted in East London that year. What a fun yet competitive way to start my bowls journey. So much happened in my first year. I practiced whenever I could and ended up winning Gold in the Border Fours, Silver in the Border Trips and Silver in the Border Pairs. At the end of the year I received the Victrix Ludorum Trophy. I have since won this Trophy in 2017 and in 2021. In 2012 I was selected to play in the Border B Team as Lead. I played Lead for the B Team for six years and then from 2018onwards I have played in the Open Team for Border. 2019 was the pinnacle of my bowling career, when I was invited to participate in the SA Masters Vets Section. During the same year, we entered a team of a Skip and three front rank players in the SA National Championships in Durban. I took up the challenge and played third and we were unbeaten in our games and won Gold. This year culminated in me taking the honours of being presented with the Old Selbornian Sports Star of the Year award. I wish I had started playing this great game earlier as it teaches one so many lessons in life and brings people together. I would like to promote and encourage the youth to start playing bowls at an early age. I am truly blessed that bowls is now a family affair for me with my husband and my two sons all playing competitively. |
