Lydia Maritz I always took part in all sport netball, tennis, hockey, karate and javelin at School and College. Later with three children, I did not have time to participate in sport myself, but as a teacher I was coach for tennis, netball, cricket and rugby. When my youngest child turned 17, I heard about Lawn Bowls. My inspiration came from that first day when I watched a game between Rene Swanepoel and Maggie van Zyl and thought, “ok that is how you do it”. Fred Downing put his keys on the green far away from the jack and said “bowl to this” and all four bowls were near the keys. I was hooked for life. All he said was “you are a natural, stay down longer, practice, practice and you will go far”. Bowls taught me to be patient, determined and never give up, even when you are 18-9 down. |
